VDP wine auction in Bad Kreuznach in 2025: An exci VDP wine auction in Bad Kreuznach in 2025: An exciting, perfectly organized event with good results and many real peaks to taste and buy! Due to the difficult 2024 vintage, there were slightly fewer participants than usual, but plenty of spectacular highlights such as the first Spätlese from Schubertslay by the Keller winery or a 2021 Eiswein from the Brücke vineyard of the Dönnhoff winery, hopefully not the last. To describe the current environment as difficult would be an understatement – but top German wines have impressively demonstrated their relevance, with resonance among bidders worldwide! More information and a deeper analysis will be available shortly at Sur-la-pointe.com.

VDP.Erntedank at Steins Traube in Mainz is somethi VDP.Erntedank at Steins Traube in Mainz is something like the German Paulée. On the eve of the VDP auction in Bad Kreuznach, Germany's top winemakers celebrated yersterday the end of the harvest together with guests for the second time. In a relaxed atmosphere, there were many fantastic mature dry Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, often in large bottles, accompanying a magnificent menu by Michelin-starred chef Philipp Stein. And then there were wonderful noble sweet wines such as Fritz Groebe's 1999 Aulerde Beerenauslese or the 2001 Hubacker Eiswein from KP Keller. 🎉

The first alcohol-free ultra-premium wine? Last we The first alcohol-free ultra-premium wine? Last week, the Schloss Johannisberg winery and Berlin-based wine technology start-up Kolonne Null invited guests to Nobelhart & Schmutzig to present Grünlack XO. 250 years after the invention of Spätlese at Schloss Johannisberg, is this the next technological milestone forward? Stefan Doktor, managing director of the traditional winery in the Rheingau region, Philipp Rößle, CEO of Kolonne Null, and Michael Worm, cellar master at Kolonne Null, gave an exciting account of the search for the current ‘Holy Grail’ of the wine world – accompanied by a formidable “Brotzeit” from Billy Wagner. The 500 bottles that were ultimately produced contain numerous individual cuvées, dating back to the 1951 vintage, which were then dealcoholised. The price of a good 100 Euro per bottle is therefore not unfounded. Nevertheless, I must admit that I would have preferred to drink a traditional Grünlack Spätlese from those years with its fabulous sweetness-acidity interplay. In the Grünlack XO, where XO stands for extra old, sweetness and acidity do not form a unity. The wine has a better texture than any other non-alcoholic wine I have tasted before. But it still does not come close to its classic counterpart.

Penfolds Grange from 2009 and the non-vintage Yatt Penfolds Grange from 2009 and the non-vintage Yattarna V were undoubtedly the highlights of the spectacular Penfolds dinner at Berlin's KaDeWe, hosted by Hagen Hoppenstedt, Department Head of Beverage. Toby Amphlett, Penfolds Global Ambassador, presented no fewer than eleven top cuvées to pair with Jacob Tracey's five-course menu, ranging from current releases such as the Thienot x Penfolds champagne to the 2009 St Henri. Among the whites, I found Yattarna 2021, although still a little closed, to be slightly stronger than the V (which consists of five vintages between 2011 and 2021). Among the reds, the 2009 Grange was a knockout: dense, powerful and complex. Next to it was one favourite of the evening: BIN 149 from 2018, one of Penfolds' ‘Wines of the World’. 85 per cent of the Cabernet grapes come from Napa, and the rest is A1 Cab from South Australia. A captivating blend!
For those who want to delve deeper into Penfolds, there is a Penfolds pop-up with tasting opportunities at KaDeWe until 16 November. 🍷

The House of Ackerman is the pioneer in sparkling The House of Ackerman is the pioneer in sparkling wine production using traditional methods outside of Champagne. Founded in 1811, it was naturally also the first producer of Crémant de Loire. Its ‘Royal’ cuvée was quickly compared to champagne, as evidenced by advertisements from the 19th century found in the old cellars in St-Hilaire-St-Florent. Today, production no longer takes place here, but instead there is a beautiful museum with fascinating art installations dedicated to sparkling wine. More on this soon on sur-la-pointe.com 🥂

Of the larger Crémant de Loire houses in Saumur, Of the larger Crémant de Loire houses in Saumur, Langlois is probably among the most consistently quality-oriented. This may be because it has belonged to Champagne Bollinger since 1973. The Clos Saint-Florent, with some very old Chenin and Cabernet Franc vines in Saumur, is certainly the jewel in the crown of the 62 hectares of vineyards owned by Langlois. More on this soon at sur-la-pointe.com. 🥂
