Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga sent me a sample bottle Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga sent me a sample bottle of the new San Leonardo 2020 vintage. But as curious as I was, I must admit that I hesitated a little when I opened it. This wine, which embodies the quintessence of northern Italian Alpine elegance, is often not easy to understand when young. And indeed, after a sip, I closed the bottle again – only to decant it the next day, four hours before tasting, and drink it with roast duck. Alongside it, I served a 2015 Carmenère from my cellar, from the oldest vineyards of San Leonardo, which, as is well known, were previously mistakenly identified as Cabernet Franc.
And indeed, the wine opened up thanks to oxygen, and the duck fat buffered the distinctive acidity. 2020 was a year with summer heat peaks. Nevertheless, the wine currently seems more closed than the 2019 from a cooler year. At least I was delighted with the great perspective I was able to elicit from it. The Carmenère was dense and expressive, but also characterised by an unusually green, herbaceous note. I will have to take another closer look at the wine I tasted for the first time... 🍷

Champagne history! Just two days after the German Champagne history! Just two days after the German launch of Maison Pompadour, the Vranken-Pommery champagne house hosted the next highlight. Together with Pommery's German director Thomas Wirtz and sommelier Hagen Hoppenstedt, I had the privilege of moderating a vertical tasting of Cuvée Louise, Pommery's prestige cuvée, on the sixth floor of KaDeWe. The bottles from the current vintage of Brut Nature 2006 down to the 1989 vintage – including two of the rare Louise Rosés (2004 and 1992) – were all in top form without exception. Finally, there was a special surprise: Thomas Wirtz had brought two versions of the single-vineyard champagne Clos Pompadour: one as a magnum from 2004, still under the name Pommery, and then as the current vintage from 2017 under the new name Maison Pompadour. Just fascinating …Many thanks to everyone involved, especially Hagen and head chef Jacob Tracey for the accompanying menu, and the great team at the KaDeWe wine bar! 🥂

The new maison of the Vranken-Pommery Group (Pommery & Associés from 1 January) presented its two premiere cuvées yesterday at Berlin's porcelain manufacturer KPM in the presence of founder Paul-François Vranken and cellar master Clément Pierlot: Pompadour – La Réserve and Clos Pompadour Blanc de Blancs 2017. I can already reveal that both are highly successful. More, including an exclusive interview with Paul-François Vranken and Clément Pierlot coming soon on Sur-la-pointe (link in bio). 🍾🥂

You don't put a Château d'Yquem at the end of a po You don't put a Château d'Yquem at the end of a post – of course it deserves its own! The king of sweet wines naturally formed the finale of the magnificent Bordeaux rarities at KaDeWe – and it made quite an impression. 1985 was an unusual vintage in Sauternes because there was hardly any noble rot. At Yquem, they waited until December before the harvest began. That's why the vintage is somewhat atypical, but nevertheless, the 1985 is a highly concentrated elixir that shows hardly any signs of its 40 years.🎉

Bordeaux heaven at Berlin's KaDeWe! Yesterday, I h Bordeaux heaven at Berlin's KaDeWe! Yesterday, I hosted the Bordeaux Rarities Tasting, the highlight of the year's wine events on the sixth floor. Introduced by host Hagen Hoppenstedt and accompanied by six finely composed courses from chef Jakob Tracey, this time the theme was the great '5 vintages: After a white starter, the rare Blanc from Château Cheval Blanc, KaDeWe opened vintages from 2015, 2005, 1995, 1985, 1975, and 1955! The highlights were Château Lynch-Bages 1985, the sensational mini-vertical of Château Trotte Vieille (2005|1985|1955) and finally the clash of the two titans Château Margaux and Château Mouton-Rothschild, both from 2005. Once again, my thanks go to the fantastic team at KaDeWe! 🍷
