The jewel of a great maison: Château Corton Grance The jewel of a great maison: Château Corton Grancey, owned by négociant Louis Latour, was in the 19th century one of the most modern wineries in the world. At Inglenook in Napa Valley, there are construction drawings in the archives of the gravity-fed wine cellar that Gustave Niebaum used as a model for his Californian winery...
The wine of the same name is a selection of the best barrels from four renowned Corton Grand Cru vineyards: Les Bressandes, Les Perrières, Les Grèves and Le Clos du Roi. Fortunately, the 2005 vintage is gradually coming into its own. In Burgundy, it has produced dense, concentrated but also enormously tannic Pinot Noirs, the better qualities of which were not to be touched for a long time. The Corton Grancey 2005 is bright and transparent, with a bouquet of tart red fruits, a hint of laurel and undergrowth. The tannins are already quite silky, the acidity still lively. More finesse than power, but still with sufficient pressure and good length. 🍷

The Paul Clüver winery produces some of South Afri The Paul Clüver winery produces some of South Africa's most remarkable Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. In fact, French clones were planted in Elgin as early as the late 1980s. I particularly like his Seven Flags series, to which I once dedicated an article on Sur-la-pointe.com. Now Paul Clüver Jr., in collaboration with Martin Prieur (Domaine Jacques Prieur), has presented the 2019 Chardonnay Colline du Matin. The grapes come from the 350-metre-high slate parcel ‘Oggendkop’ (Morning Hill or Colline Matin), and half of the wine was aged in new French oak. After four years of bottle ageing, a few hundred bottles were released. It is simply a magnificent Chardonnay, combining Paul Clüver's mineral-concentrated cool climate characteristics with the elegance of great white Burgundies. Unfortunately, only a handful of bottles have found their way to the German market.

Special Champagnes for special occasions... Le Léo Special Champagnes for special occasions... Le Léon 2006 Extra Brut was part of the first wave of new "cuvées parcellaires de petit volume" presented by Champagne Philipponnat in 2015. Fortunately, I was visiting the Maison in Mareuil-sur-Aӱ at the time... Unlike the iconic Clos des Goisses vineyard, Le Léon does not come from Mareuil, but from the Grand Cru Aӱ. The single-varietal Pinot Noir base wines were aged 45 per cent in wood, with malolactic fermentation blocked. The tirage of 2,085 bottles took place in June 2017. In February 2015, the bottles were disgorged and given a dosage of 4.5 grams.
Contrary to what one might expect from a mature vintage, almost eleven years later, this champagne is by no means opulent, but rather vinous and with powerful acidity, yet still quite buttoned up. I would definitely wait before opening the next bottle (at least if it has been stored in a bottle storage cabinet like this one). 🥂

The history before the German wine miracle: Few pe The history before the German wine miracle: Few people know that some fantastic wines were produced in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s. Perhaps even ahead of the Staatsweingüter and Langwerth von Simmern, Schloss Eltz winery was a trailblazer in the Rheingau region. This 1967 Rauenthaler Rothenberg Riesling Auslese had a problematic cork, but after opening and a few hours of aeration, it presented itself excellently over several days. The 1978 Eltviller Sonnenberg Spätburgunder (one of two auction bottles) is an absolute rarity. Here, the cork was much better intact. And indeed, the wine was pleasant to drink: brick red color in the glass, some spice and tertiary aromas with intact structure. However, it had to be drunk quickly.

Aged in wood, no malolactic fermentation, very lit Aged in wood, no malolactic fermentation, very little or no dosage: Collard-Picard champagnes are definitely more suited to connoisseurs. I have just tasted the current portfolio for the sequel to my champagne book. One of my favourites is Racines Autre Cru, a single-varietal Pinot Meunier. The complete profile of the house will be available shortly on Sur-la-pointe. 🥂

Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga sent me a sample bottle Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga sent me a sample bottle of the new San Leonardo 2020 vintage. But as curious as I was, I must admit that I hesitated a little when I opened it. This wine, which embodies the quintessence of northern Italian Alpine elegance, is often not easy to understand when young. And indeed, after a sip, I closed the bottle again – only to decant it the next day, four hours before tasting, and drink it with roast duck. Alongside it, I served a 2015 Carmenère from my cellar, from the oldest vineyards of San Leonardo, which, as is well known, were previously mistakenly identified as Cabernet Franc.
And indeed, the wine opened up thanks to oxygen, and the duck fat buffered the distinctive acidity. 2020 was a year with summer heat peaks. Nevertheless, the wine currently seems more closed than the 2019 from a cooler year. At least I was delighted with the great perspective I was able to elicit from it. The Carmenère was dense and expressive, but also characterised by an unusually green, herbaceous note. I will have to take another closer look at the wine I tasted for the first time... 🍷
