On Sunday, Berlin hosted FÖLD, the trade fair for On Sunday, Berlin hosted FÖLD, the trade fair for artisanal wines from Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Here is one highlight from each country: 1. Czech Republic: Vykoukal Winery Terroir Austerlitz Riesling 2022. The fact that Riesling grows here in Moravia on the battlefield of Austerlitz is worth a post in itself. But the wine, which was first aged in acacia barrels and then in stainless steel, is truly remarkable. 2. Hungary: Barta Pince Tokaj Öreg Kiraly Dülo Furmint 2023. Barta is still a young winery, but today it is one of the top wineries in Tokaj. Particularly noteworthy is their commitment to the great old top vineyards of Mad. Their speciality is dry wines. My favourite was the dry Furmint from the ‘Old King’ vineyard. 3. Slovakia: Vino Vdovjak Furmint ŽiWine 2023. Five percent of the Tokaj region now belongs to Slovakia. This is also where the only Slovakian winery at the Berlin fair came from. Their Furmint, with a proportion of botrytised berries, macerated on the skins for three days. The impressive result is unusually spicy, rich and slightly smoky. 4. Slovenia: Miro Vino Kog Fuga Mundi 2008. A cuvée of all grape varieties from the winery in what is known as Slovenian Styria, near the border with Croatia. An oxidative style with distinct residual sweetness despite more than a decade on the lees in wooden barrels. A meditation wine, but the last of its kind. Due to climate change, it has not been possible to produce this wine since.

Few people know that Belle Epoque from Champagne P Few people know that Belle Epoque from Champagne Perrier-Jouët is also available as a Rosé. In fact, there are two: the very rare Cuvée Florescence made its debut with the 2015 vintage. No Meunier is used; and the assemblage is made with red wine from Les Riceys. I tasted both champagnes together with the entire Perrier-Jouët portfolio at Sur-la-pointe (link in bio).🥂

On the occasion of the Berlin Bar Convent 2025, th On the occasion of the Berlin Bar Convent 2025, the French Embassy hosted a cocktail get-together. On this evening, several French spirits and wine producers presented gems from their range. My highlights: Cognac XO from Domaine de Landreau, Vintage Armagnacs from Maison Aurian and Marquis de Montesquiou, and the wonderful liqueurs from Domaine Combier from Saumur. It's a shame that this traditional house does not yet have a German importer! 🍸

These Rheingau Rieslings from 2021 seem to come fr These Rheingau Rieslings from 2021 seem to come from two different galaxies: “Kuhweg” means “cattle track” – a wine in Germany could hardly have a less glamorous name. Schloss Johannisberg, on the other hand, has been a beacon of German wine culture for over 250 years, and the Schlossberg is a world-famous vineyard. Nevertheless, both wines are quite on the same level. Kuhweg is an old vineyard on the Rüdesheimer Berg, and Carl Erhard is one of the best local winemakers. But the Bronzelack Riesling dry from Schloss Johannisberg also impressively demonstrates that tradition is understood here as a mission for the future.

This year, the wines were finally presented. I tasted both the 2015 Felseneck and Kirchberg GG at home – and I was impressed. Perhaps the Kirchberg, with its focused, precise personality, had the edge. But in any case, it was a great decision by Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm to give his great Rieslings so much time.
Champagne Mandois is about to take a big leap forw Champagne Mandois is about to take a big leap forward: most of its vineyards are now organically farmed, and the cuverie has been transformed into an ultra-modern ‘galerie parcellaire’. My portrait of the Pierry-based champagne house, including a tasting of its current portfolio, is now available in two languages on Sur-la-pointe.com. 🥂
