Bordeaux magic! The 1985 vintage was quickly class Bordeaux magic! The 1985 vintage was quickly classified as good but ready to drink early. Some wines are now in their second plateau phase. Legendary German wine critic Armin Diel rated the 1985s during En Primeur week. This weekend, he organized a unique tasting of rare wines featuring 25 of the top châteaux from this vintage (including some such as Le Pin and Petrus as rare magnums) providing an opportunity for a fresh review. A fascinating evening! The full report will be available shortly on Sur-la-pointe. 🍷

Three days on the Loire to celebrate the 50th anni Three days on the Loire to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Crémants from Loire and Burgundy! It has been an unprecedented success story since the first two Crémant appellations were approved in 1975. I had the honour of tasting 50 Crémants from the two appellations exclusively at the Abbey of Fontevraud to mark the anniversary, visiting three Maisons and three winegrowers, and meeting many interesting people over wonderful meals. We discussed questions such as: Is Chardonnay a suitable partner for Chenin? Should more Crémants be aged in wood and with longer bottle fermentation? How is the German market for Crémant de Loire developing? There will soon be in-depth articles on this here and on Sur-la-pointe. Many thanks to the organisers at InterLoire! 🍾🥂🎉

Last Sunday, DO Rioja celebrated its 100th anniver Last Sunday, DO Rioja celebrated its 100th anniversary in Berlin. It was an insightful masterclass and a wonderful dinner. Three of my top picks: 1. Cuentaviñas Arriscado Rioja Blanco 2023 for its complex yet extremely precise and fresh characteristics. 2. Javier San Pedro Rioja La Taconera Vinedo Singular 2022 for its delicate spiciness and 3. Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta Rioja La Centenaria 2022 because it masterfully carries tradition into the present day. Perhaps the best wine of the tasting – Bodegas Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2010 – unfortunately disappeared before I could take a photo. 🍷

Two new champagne releases, two comparable and sop Two new champagne releases, two comparable and sophisticated concepts: no dosage and no malolactic fermentation. Otherwise, there are of course many differences between Louis Roederer+Starck Brut nature 2018 and Gosset Dosage Zéro. Sur-la-pointe.com has compared both champagnes on its website (link in bio). 🍾

On Sunday, Berlin hosted FÖLD, the trade fair for On Sunday, Berlin hosted FÖLD, the trade fair for artisanal wines from Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia. Here is one highlight from each country: 1. Czech Republic: Vykoukal Winery Terroir Austerlitz Riesling 2022. The fact that Riesling grows here in Moravia on the battlefield of Austerlitz is worth a post in itself. But the wine, which was first aged in acacia barrels and then in stainless steel, is truly remarkable. 2. Hungary: Barta Pince Tokaj Öreg Kiraly Dülo Furmint 2023. Barta is still a young winery, but today it is one of the top wineries in Tokaj. Particularly noteworthy is their commitment to the great old top vineyards of Mad. Their speciality is dry wines. My favourite was the dry Furmint from the ‘Old King’ vineyard. 3. Slovakia: Vino Vdovjak Furmint ŽiWine 2023. Five percent of the Tokaj region now belongs to Slovakia. This is also where the only Slovakian winery at the Berlin fair came from. Their Furmint, with a proportion of botrytised berries, macerated on the skins for three days. The impressive result is unusually spicy, rich and slightly smoky. 4. Slovenia: Miro Vino Kog Fuga Mundi 2008. A cuvée of all grape varieties from the winery in what is known as Slovenian Styria, near the border with Croatia. An oxidative style with distinct residual sweetness despite more than a decade on the lees in wooden barrels. A meditation wine, but the last of its kind. Due to climate change, it has not been possible to produce this wine since.
