A great Sicilian classic for summer: Marsala Vergi A great Sicilian classic for summer: Marsala Vergine Riserva 2004 from Containe Florio. The Grillo grapes were fermented in cement and then aged in wood for 18 years, 143 meters from the sea, during which time 33 percent evaporated. The alcohol content of 19 percent, obtained through fortification, is barely noticeable, instead giving way to hints of honey, hazelnuts, and a salty finish.

A Riesling sparkler was the big surprise for me at A Riesling sparkler was the big surprise for me at the presentation of the 2025 Lower Austrian regional winners at the Austrian Embassy in Berlin. (As a reminder, Lower Austria/Niederösterreich encompasses no less than the wine-growing regions of Wachau, Kamptal, Thermenregion, Carnuntum, Weinviertel, Traisental, Kremstal, and Wagram).
But the 2019 Grande Reserve from the Ried Heiligenstein in Langenlois, produced by the Steininger winery, avoids overly direct fruit aromas and distracting petrol notes. Fermented in acacia wood, left on the lees for eight months before bottle fermentation and disgorged with little dosage in November 2024, this is a substantial yet elegant sparkling wine of international caliber. 🥂

The annual presentation of the Wegeler Winery in O The annual presentation of the Wegeler Winery in Oestrich-Winkel was a small wine fair in its own right, featuring wines from the Wegeler estate in the Rheingau region, the Mosel region, and, of course, the Krone Winery in Assmannshausen. There were spectacular wines from the current vintage, as well as wonderfully matured wines from the Vintage Collection, such as the Rothenberg Auslese from 1990. The BTHVN Charta Riesling was presented for the first time, a wine that commemorates the friendship between a member of the Wegeler family and the young Beethoven. Operations manager and cellar master Michael Burgdorf has created a Rheingau Charta 2.0, so to speak: partially spontaneously fermented, with little residual sweetness and a touch of wood. A great wine that has what it takes to lead a Charta renaissance! 🔥

The cool weather at least has the advantage of bei The cool weather at least has the advantage of being able to open a Pomerol in summer. 1990 Vieux Château Certan was never the darling of international wine critics, nor did it have the density and power of the modern vintages since 2000. But it also has an elegance and delicacy that one would hardly expect from a Pomerol. Its texture is almost Burgundian. In addition, it has hardly any signs of ageing and will certainly remain at this stage for another decade. A fascinating wine. 🍷
